Historical Sketch from our Church Bylaws The members of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, gratefully recognized this Church as the “outward and visible sign” of that spiritual Church defined and described on page 583 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. A group of friends interested in Christian Science met together in Rehoboth on April 29, 1947. They discussed the possibility of holding services and the need for a meeting place. At a meeting on May 14, 1947, it was announced that the Club Room of the Village Improvement Association had been secured for services to be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday mornings. The first service was scheduled for May 18th. On March 14, 1948, a meeting was held following the regular Church service to organize the Christian Science Society and a Sunday School. On April 22, 1948, the Society was recognized by The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, Massachusetts and on June 26, 1948, the first lecture was given in the Center Theatre in Rehoboth Beach. The year 1956 was memorable. In March, the growing Society was recognized as a Branch of The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston with its present title of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Rehoboth Beach and a Reading Room was opened at 4 North First Street in downtown Rehoboth. Sunday School attendance increased and the need for more room was met through the beneficence of members who provided the use of their recreation room at 40 Columbia Avenue. Additional fruitage followed in 1957 with the purchase of a building lot at Bayard Avenue and Norfolk Street. In October 1958 the architect presented designs which resulted in the authorization of bids for the new edifice. Bids were received and a second submission of bids a year later brought the unanimous decision to build. The cornerstone was laid on September 3, 1960, and the first service in the new Church building was held on December 11, 1960. With great rejoicing, dedication services were held at 11:00 a.m. and at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 13, 1974. The members of this Church, impelled by love for God and man, and devotion to our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, rejoice in increasing opportunities for demonstration in the blending of discernment, interest, and ardor for the cause of Christian Science. “Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.” Psalm 127
